The Way of the Cross

Good friday, April 3, 2026

On Good Friday, parishioners of All Saints’ Episcopal Church will observe the Catholic devotion known as The Way of the Cross. Observed by pilgrims to Jerusalem through the ages, this mini-pilgrimage proceeds along a series of 14 stations of plain wooden crosses, based on events associated with our Lord Jesus Christ’s passion and death. The Way of the Cross serves as a spiritual journey through participant meditation on scenes from His condemnation to His burial.

In this walk with Jesus, we reflect on His suffering to gain grace and deeper spiritual insight into His sacrifice for our sake. All present take part in the procession, listening to the readings and singing hymns at the different cross stations on the hill behind our church.

The 14 Stations of the Cross

  1. Jesus is condemned to death: He accepts His cross.

  2. Jesus takes up his cross: He carries the heavy wood.

  3. Jesus falls the first time: He falls under the weight.

  4. Jesus meets his afflicted mother: A painful encounter with Mary.

  5. The cross is laid on Simon of Cyrene: He is forced to help.

  6. A woman wipes the face of Jesus: A gesture of compassion.

  7. Jesus falls the second time: His strength fails again.

  8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem: He consoles them.

  9. Jesus falls the third time: He falls near the top.

  10. Jesus is stripped of his garments: He is humiliated.

  11. Jesus is nailed to the cross: He is crucified.

  12. Jesus dies on the cross: He gives up His spirit.

  13. The body of Jesus is placed in the arms of his mother: His body is taken down.

  14. Jesus is laid in the tomb: He is buried.
